Show Plates vs Legal Plates
Show plates are designed purely for display, exhibitions, or photo shoots, and are not approved for public roads. Legal plates follow strict DVLA standards and are fully compliant for road use across the UK.
Legal Plates
- Black characters on a white front and yellow rear, with reflective surfaces that meet British Standard BS AU 145e.
- Every legal plate must include the supplier’s name and the current British Standard number.
- 3D and 4D characters are permitted, provided they are a single shade of black and meet visibility standards.
Show Plates
- Show plates often feature coloured designs or custom fonts. They look great for display but are not suitable for driving. Using them on the road can lead to fines or an MOT failure.
- Altering the spacing or layout of your registration, or using bolts to change its appearance, is illegal and may result in a £1,000 fine and the withdrawal of your registration.
What Is 4D and 3D
3D and 4D plates both give your registration a raised, premium look, but there is a key difference.
3D Plates
3D plates use domed gel resin over printed letters for a soft, rounded finish.
4D Plates
4D plates use laser cut acrylic for sharper, more defined characters that stand out in depth and clarity.
Both are legal as long as the lettering is a single shade of black and the plates meet the BS AU 145e standard. These styles are perfect for anyone who wants a clean, modern look without compromising legality.
What Plate Sizes Are Available
Choosing the right size helps your registration sit neatly and enhances the look of your vehicle.
Standard Plates
520 x 111 mm, the traditional UK size.
Short Plates
Designed for shorter registrations, available in 13", 16", 17" and 18" lengths.
Hex Plates
Angular and modern, available in several widths to suit your car’s design.
Other Formats
Bike plates, oversized plates for SUVs, and import sizes for Japanese or US spec vehicles.
All sizes must still meet UK character height, spacing, and material standards.
Number Plate Laws (UK)
The law ensures all plates are clear, traceable, and easily readable.
- Plates must be reflective, with black characters on white at the front and yellow at the rear.
- They must display the supplier’s details and the current British Standard number (BS AU 145e).
- Characters must be solid black, with no colours, tints, or reflective effects.
- National flags or identifiers are permitted if officially recognised, and zero emission vehicles may use a green flash.
